The Reno Little Theater’s 90th season gets under way with two shows performed in repertory: POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive by Selina Fillinger, and Support Group for Men by Ellen Fairey. POTUS is a fast-paced political farce that follows a chaotic day in the White House. When the president makes a catastrophic public blunder, seven women from his inner circle scramble to save his presidency and prevent global disaster. Showtimes for POTUS are 7:30 p.m., Sept. 13-14, 26-28 and Oct. 10-12; and 2 p.m. on Sept. 15, 29, and Oct. 13. Support Group for Men explores the lives of four middle-aged men who gather weekly for a support group in a Chicago apartment. As they share their struggles and insecurities, the arrival of a mysterious stranger one evening forces them to confront deeper issues of masculinity, identity and change. Showtimes for Support Group for Men are at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 20-21, Oct. 3-5, 17-19; and 2 p.m. on Sept. 22, Oct. 6, 20. The plays are at Reno Little Theater, 147 E. Several area celebrations will highlight Hispanic culture this month, including a new special event in downtown Reno. The Biggest Little Latin Festival features taco vendors, a craft fair, lucha libre, traditional dancing, family-friendly activities, a salsa competition and two days of live music including headliners Los Canarios de Michoacan and Flor de Toloache with Jacqie Rivera. The street party takes place from 4 to 10 p.m., Friday, Sept. 13; and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 14, on Virginia Street between Second and Sixth streets in downtown Reno. This weekend, Fox Cultural Hall will host the fourth annual Mexican Heritage Festival in honor of Día de la Independencia, or Mexican Independence Day, which is celebrated on Sept. 16. A merry meet
September is also the time when pagans around the world hold pagan pride events. Reno Pagan Pride celebrates the diversity of pagan beliefs and practices in our community with its festival featuring opening and closing rituals, workshops, a drum circle, a labyrinth walk, kids’ activities, food, music and a vendor area. School-supply donations will be collected for Sierra Nevada Academy Charter School. Bring chairs, blankets and a willingness to learn more about other faiths. Celebrating “diversity, community and equality,” the eighth annual Sassabration kicks off with a parade at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 W. King St., Carson City. Get in costume and join in the fun as a procession of pirate ships, art cars, decorated bicycles and walkers makes its way down Carson Street to convene at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint, Carson Hot Springs and Shoe Tree Brewing, 1500 Old Hot Springs Road. The pride festival and fundraiser supporting local organizations gets started at noon with food, vendors and performances by Sapphic Musk, Cut-Rate Druggist, Betty Blowtorch, Heterophobia, Hired Fun, Tom Miller, Roxxy Collie, Glitter Bats, Canyon White and Spike McGuire. Rock show
Nevada is a state rich in rock and minerals. It’s the nation’s leading producer of gold, silver, barite, mercury and lithium, and has an abundance of gemstones like garnets, black fire opals and turquoise. No wonder geologists and rock collectors flock to the Silver State. See a variety of rocks, gems and minerals at Jackpot of Gems, an annual show presented by the Reno Gem & Mineral Society. There will be displays, demonstrations, kids’ activities, raffles for prizes, silent auctions and vendors selling minerals, gems and jewelry. Jewish Nevada hosts the third annual Milk & Honey festival to celebrate Jewish culture and the Northern Nevada Jewish community. Dark wave calling
Los Angeles-based bands Dildox and More Ephemerol bring their Irrational Impulse Tour to Reno this weekend. Dildox—featuring Sophie Alieninova on vocals/synths, and Davey Shook on bass guitar, synths and drum machine—play aggressive, yet danceable, synth punk. The duo will release a new EP, Bound to Submit, on Sept. 16. Co-headliner More Ephemerol returns to the area more than a year after playing at the Holland Project’s Serva Pool space. Band members Chad Fjerstad and Tamara Sky create dark synth pop that’s reminiscent of early ’80s minimal wave acts like Turquoise Days, Oppenheimer Analysis, Human League and Fad Gadget. The duo’s latest album is Apotheosis Pageant. On this tour, Fjerstad will be joined by Gina Kuhn, who will be filling in on vocals for new mom Tamara Sky. Heart and soul
Enjoy an evening with music legend Booker T. Jones, who will perform two shows in Carson City next weekend. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner has been a driving force in the music world for decades. As the leader of Booker T. & the MG’s, he shaped the sound of soul music with iconic hits like “Green Onions” and has collaborated with numerous artists across genres. The musician, songwriter, record producer and author continues to record and tour internationally, both as a solo artist and as head of Booker T. Stax Revue. Booker T. Jones will hit the stage at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 20, and Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Nashville Social Club, 1105 S. Carson St., in Carson City. Tickets are $55.
