Ven como eres
The Off the Rails Third Thursday Summer Concert Series wraps up its season with the Latin dance grooves of Tropa Magica. Describing themselves as “psychedelic cumbia punk,” brothers David and Rene Pacheco will get the crowd moving with their energetic music that blends the guitar and rhythms of ’60s Peruvian cumbias and ’90s grunge with a neo-Southern psychedelic twist. The all-ages event includes a kids’ zone, food trucks and a beer/cocktail garden. Tropa Magica and opening act Velvet Pouch get the party started at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 19, at Locomotion Plaza (Downtown Reno ReTrac Events Plaza), 300 N. Virginia St., between the Eldorado and the Whitney Peak Hotel. Admission is free. Visit www.offbeatreno.com or www.facebook.com/events/795734502185057.
Get into the groove
Head out to Fallon this weekend for an evening of high-energy, brassy funk performed by New York City ensemble Lucky Chops. Formed in 2006, the group got its start busking to crowds at New York City subway stations, eventually reaching a worldwide audience when a video of their mash-up of Lipps, Inc.’s “Funkytown” and James Brown’s “I Feel Good” went viral. The six-piece band pays homage to America’s New Orleans brass band tradition while fusing their sound with eclectic rock, Caribbean, Arabic, Eastern European, funk, jazz, ska, gospel and EDM. The group maintains a busy schedule, touring across several continents, and regularly performs clinics and educational outreaches to help train and inspire the next generation of musicians. Lucky Chops will get the show going at 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Barkley Theatre inside Oats Park Art Center, 151 E. Park St., in Fallon. Tickets are $10-$20. Call 775-423-1440 or go to churchillarts.org.
